Does Zoom AI Companion sign a BAA?
Only on some plans or setups
Zoom signs HIPAA BAAs on paid plans: self-serve for Pro and through sales or the web portal for larger plans. Zoom says its AI features, including ZoomMate, are available to BAA customers, but warns that certain AI features may not be available to healthcare BAA customers and publishes no full list.
Not fully covered by the BAA: Meeting Summary with AI Companion; ZoomMate and other Zoom AI features (in-meeting questions, smart recording, Team Chat AI).

By plan
| Plan | BAA | How to get it | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro (Zoom for Healthcare) | Signs a BAA | Accept or sign online | At checkout, choose 'United States Agreement (BAA)' and accept it. Existing accounts can turn on the BAA under Plans and Billing > Plan Management. No extra manual configuration is needed after the BAA is signed.[1] |
| Business / Business Plus / Enterprise | Signs a BAA | Through sales | New Business, Business Plus, and Enterprise customers go through Sales. Existing accounts can turn on the BAA in the web portal. Zoom also signs BAAs for other paid plans on its pricing page.[1],[2] |
Are the AI features covered?
Vendors often sign a BAA for the core product but leave some AI features out. Here is what Zoom Communications says about each one.
| AI feature | Under the BAA | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Meeting Summary with AI Companion | Partly covered | Zoom says AI features are available to BAA customers but that certain AI features may not be available for healthcare BAA customers, without naming them. We could not confirm a Zoom page that places Meeting Summary itself under the BAA.[1] |
| ZoomMate and other Zoom AI features (in-meeting questions, smart recording, Team Chat AI) | Partly covered | Zoom says AI features, including ZoomMate, are available to BAA customers, but certain AI features may not be available for healthcare and higher-ed BAA customers. The individual feature articles only say features may be unavailable for some verticals, without naming which.[1],[3],[4],[5] |
| Smart Recording with AI | Not stated | The Smart Recording article does not mention a BAA or HIPAA and says the feature may be unavailable in some regions or industry verticals.[4] |
| Clinical Notes (Zoom Workplace for Clinicians) | Not stated | Zoom's healthcare pages say its infrastructure supports HIPAA programs and BAAs, but none says Clinical Notes is covered by the BAA. The setup article requires the Workplace for Clinicians add-on and does not mention HIPAA.[6] |

A signed BAA is necessary but not sufficient for HIPAA compliance, which also depends on configuration, access controls, and your own policies. Verdicts summarize the vendor's own published terms as of the date checked; confirm with the vendor and your counsel before sending protected health information. Not legal advice.
