Is Google Translate HIPAA compliant?

Not confirmed. We couldn't find a Business Associate Agreement offer for Google Translate on Google's own pages. Without a signed BAA, keep patient data out of it.

Does Google Translate sign a BAA?

Not confirmed

Google publishes no BAA route for the free Google Translate app or website. Google's HIPAA list names the paid Cloud Translation API, not consumer Translate. BAA availability is unknown, and the covered option is Google Cloud Translation under a Google Cloud BAA.

Based on 3 sources, all from Google unless marked.

Free Google Translate (app, website, Chrome)Not confirmedNot statedGoogle's HIPAA page lists Cloud Translation and AutoML Translation as covered Google Cloud products, but not consumer Google Translate. Translate falls under Google's general Terms of Service, which do not mention HIPAA or a BAA. No Google page found says outright that Translate must not be used with PHI, so the verdict is unknown rather than no.[1],[2]

Are the AI features covered?

Vendors often sign a BAA for the core product but leave some AI features out. Here is what Google says about each one.

A signed BAA is necessary but not sufficient for HIPAA compliance, which also depends on configuration, access controls, and your own policies. Verdicts summarize the vendor's own published terms as of the date checked; confirm with the vendor and your counsel before sending protected health information. Not legal advice.
